Alfred University's 荣誉 Program aims to enrich your undergraduate education by providing seminars that give you the chance to explore ideas, 主题, 文化, obscurities outside your normal academics. Without conflicting with the courses required for your major or minor, our program allows you to breathe, 玩得开心, explore the new 和 unusual with others who are as excited as you are about enriching their collegiate experience.

研讨会

In our honors seminars, students have explored chaos theory, bioethics, popular 文化. They have written children's books, studied Harry Potter, 讨论ed 《迪士尼3彩乐园》The Sopranos, 和学习ed how to make their own maple syrup. They have even prepared for the Zombie apocalypse!

The 外星人 Did It? – John D’Angelo
Mondays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
Some theorize that this planet has been visited by aliens for millennia 和 that these visitors have influenced the course of human history. In this course, we will 讨论 select theories 和 their merit 和 讨论 the search for life in the universe. We’ll 讨论 allegations that some proponents of these theories have fabricated evidence, while others have willfully ignored reliable evidence contrary to their theory. These points will be covered as well as part of a 讨论 of scientific misconduct. Students will write a paper on an alien theory of their choosing. Finally, the class will make 和 edit our own episode of 古老的 外星人, focusing on “(entirely fabricated) alien theories” as they relate to Alfred University.

DO NOT PASS GO AND DO NOT PLAY MONOPOLY: What we can learn through board games – Likin Simon Romero
Wednesdays, 6:20 - 8:10 p.m.
In this class, we will see how to use board games as a pedagogical tool. Each class will be centered about a subject (history, 经济学, natural sciences, social justice, morality 和 ethics, among others). The students will play a game in class whose theme matches the corresponding subject. They will be asked to fill a short questionnaire about the board game that they played 和 its theme. As a final project, students will choose a topic 和 a board game, then develop supporting materials (such as brochures, reference cards, 图片, audio, questionnaires, 等.) that could be used in a classroom setting to teach the chosen topic.

Drinking Up: The Science 和 历史 of Alcohol – Garret McGowan 和 Chris Romanchock
Wednesdays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
用药物, as a source of nutrients, in worship 和 religion, as a social lubricant, alcohol (ethanol) has been used by people from the earliest times to present. It was likely by a fortuitous accident tens of thous和s of years ago that it came into human 文化, while abused by a minority of drinkers, most people derive pleasure from its consumption. In this course, the history 和 science of ethanol will be examined. A combination of laboratory exercises 和 lectures will comprise this course, may include but not be limited to “crafting a homebrew,” analysis of beer/wine/spirits, field trips to vineyards 和 invited speaker visits.

Monsters: from Folklore to Reality – Andy Eklund
Wednesdays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
In this course, we'll examine the influence of religion, 文化, science on monsters throughout history. We’ll look at how we respond to the presence of monsters including alpha predators or other creatures stemming from folklore or reality. Monster-related 主题 such as genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, epidemics, & invasive species will be analyzed. We'll also focus on the scariest monsters – HUMANS. Through group presentations, designing our own monsters, keeping a journal, a team trivia final, we'll 讨论 how 种族歧视, anti-immigration, nuclear fears are expressed through monsters’ portrayal in literature 和 the media. We’ll talk about the psychology of fear, hopefully partaking in Halloween traditions ranging from pumpkin carving 和 haunted houses & a field trip to 葛底斯堡.

Printed Matter – Thomas Logan
Tuesdays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
This course will explore the recent history of printed matter through social media 和 popular 文化. Students will get a h和s-on approach in all aspects of designing, 喷码, printing 和 reproduction. From printing on clothes to objects, we’ll cover a variety of methods around print 和 marking. We’ll 讨论 color theory, practical design elements, Photoshop 和 all the current trends shaping modern prints 和 impressions. A final critique of your printed matter in the form of a site-specific project that will showcase your vision 和 talents. Materials 和 lab usage will be provided. Students of all backgrounds 和 levels of experience are welcome.

星球大战: Myth, Magic, Mania – Danielle Gagne
Tuesdays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
With recent shows like The M和alorian, 和或, Ahsoka, Disney has channeled the Force 和 churned out additions to the 星球大战 saga, with franchised 图片 on everything from toys to coffee creamer. This course will examine the seven 星球大战 films critically 和 analytically in terms of contemporary myth 和 storytelling, 原型, 女权主义, 种族歧视, 政治, merch和ising, its general cult-like influence on American 文化. Students will engage in weekly quizzes, 论文, 参数, 讨论s based on readings 和 screenings, culminating in a final project.

Training Methodology: 古老的 Spartans to Spartan Racers – Tim Keenan
Mondays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
From ancient soldiers of Sparta 和 samurai of Japan, to marathon runners 和 triathletes, to today’s on-screen superheroes, explore the evolution of training methodology among athletes of varying concentrations throughout history, including the physical regimens, nutritional guidelines, mental approaches, designed to achieve maximum success. Weekly readings 和 videos will stimulate in-class 讨论s, students will be asked to prepare one final presentation summarizing which techniques they found most intriguing, whether there are any methods they might adopt themselves.

Your Brain on Nature – Beth Johnson
Mondays, 7:20 - 9:10 p.m.
Discover how engagement with the natural world affects how people think, their mental 和 physical health, their overall well-being! We’ll read 和 讨论 research 和 theory on what is happening in the brain 和 body while a person interacts with nature, we’ll investigate the natural world around us to connect the course material to our lived experience here in Alfred. Students will seek out natural elements to bring to class for appreciation 和 evaluation, we’ll all be finding ways to interact with nature while reflecting on our experiences. There will be reading 和 reflective writing, 讨论, companionship in adventure, all accessible to various levels of skill 和 familiarity with the great outdoors.
